DREAMS FROM MY FATHER
Author : Pako Lebanna
TITLE: DREAMS FROM MY FATHER
PUBLISHER: CANONGATE
AUTHOR: BARACK OBAMA
Though this book was published a few years ago, the American election campaign that ignited global interest has made the book very relevant as Obama seeks a second term in office. Dreams from My Father tackles the hugely political questions of identity and belonging from a personal perspective of an individual who experienced such questions first hand. Born to a Black American (Kenyan) father and a white American mother, Obama writes about his mother’s family’s migration from Kansas to Hawaii, his childhood home in Indonesia, and his travels to Kenya.
Apart from the obvious reasons why anyone would read the book, that is to gain knowledge on the man who made history by becoming the first Black president of the
world’s most powerful state, this is well written work of literature - an honest work.
For someone who wrote the book before his first campaign for president, he is very honest about his own attributes and achievements in life. Obama does not pretend to be pristine, rather presents himself as an ordinary human, with fears, insecurities, vulnerabilities, something any reader would relate to. Naturally, he also presents his positives; there is a whole chapter about his community organisation efforts and social development work in Chicago, the capital of the Illinois state where he was senator
before becoming the American president. A worthy read. ENDS
