TÔÇÖis the season to be jolly...
Author : Otshidile Onkabetse
Seeds are planted…trees grow, trees get pruned or even chopped down, some trees wither and some bear fruit. All in all in every season the tree adapts and transits into a new season. We are like trees…we are born...We live…we have our being…we change…and develop as we move into every season. I close my eyes and I look back on this year as a new season approaches….what have I done? What have you done in 365 days…. I am almost tempted to go back to my year’s resolutions and try to review my checklist and try to maximise on the few days that are left till next year….see we are fast approaching a new season… a door has been opened for us all…some will walk in dusty and full of scars and wounds from yesterday’s battles, some walk in squeaky clean and flawless…and others….sadly never made it to this season. For some, this is a season of hope…..for some an anticipation of the worst…whatever the case, if you are reading this you made it to this very season…something worth smiling about….so T’is the season to be jolly as we embrace….a new Season.
I am tempted to the sing the song…. “…It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas….clothes in every store….na na na na ….! Once again we find ourselves all keyed up for this upcoming season…..the joys of family gatherings and big feasts, new hairstyles and a new wardrobe….new everything! And everything seems to bring us joy!
The city is already painted red, with Santa Clause manikins already welcoming people into grocery stores and glistening Christmas trees erected in an array of shopping complexes ….is this all there is to Christmas?
For me, Christmas always used to mean getting presents and of course giving them out …getting new clothes and having big family gatherings etc…..then as I grew up I started to wonder if there could possibly be more to Christmas than just a holiday...
I have realised that a lot of people are happy on Christmas but for the wrong reasons…I know that this may sound a bit absurd. I mean is that even possible? Yes it is!
A lot of people are happy as this new season approaches for the wrong reasons, and as soon as the excitement dies out…we find ourselves having been unprepared for this season because we held a different approach towards it…and then we are stuck in the middle of our ‘transformation’, and we remain oblivious to the significance of the transition we are making. We then remain stagnant until another season approaches and the cycle continues (… quite a mouthful…I know!)
T’is the season to be jolly…no doubt about that…now let us enjoy our season responsibly...Let us go all out and do whatever makes us happy…but let us not endanger our lives all in the name of having fun. We are celebrating so many things here...
The fact that we live…we made it...Through the storms…we swam in the shark infested sea, we came out with broken flesh and foul wounds that made onlookers shun us…. but we made it! Some lost their jobs and experienced broken relationships but you made it….!
This season is a celebration of your strength through it all…maybe you had some people pull you out of your mess (thank them) maybe you were seemingly all alone… (Thank God, He was there). Those who did not make it are not losers, they are just winners who never received their standing ovation…..but you made it, so celebrate! So my word to you is in whatever way you chose to celebrate all of this…. let it not be to your detriment.
Christmas is also a remembrance of God’s love for us and a remembrance of the birth of Jesus which brought hope to all of mankind. So that is the hope that we often overlook sometimes.
We should be grateful for that and although I acknowledge the fact that not everyone believes in this Gospel, I am confident that this truth has never disappointed those who have hope in it.
So, my message to you today is to hope….tis the season to hope. Even as you stare doubt and impossibility in the face, know that hope for this season is just around the corner. Your breakthrough comes in the midst of you hoping for a miracle.
This festive, I encourage you to have fun…and I mean really have fun…just make sure it is good clean fun…bear in mind the significance of this celebration in all its richness. Let it not only be about you but remember the next person, your friends, your family, the enemy and the stranger…..this festive season we are all human.
We are all worthy of joy. Let us not steal anyone’s joy, and let us not be stingy with our joy, let it be something that we share..There is enough for everyone…! And money cannot and will not be able to buy this joy that we are entitled to this festive.
This is a joy that was born amidst all the tears, sweat and toil everyone endured this year…this is the song that will fall from all our lips when we all acknowledge that we tried our best, and even if we did not, there was the divine intervention, which carried us though.
This is a joy that is undeserved, and it comes from He who created us, allowing us to experience Him for ourselves and forget about all that we have been through and just appreciate what we have as a result.
I encourage you this festive season to hold onto the hope that will see you though even when the music is gone, when the meat is all finished, when the roads start leading back to our offices and respective towns and villages.
When the holidays are over….your hope for something beyond all this, your hope for something greater ….will carry you beyond the festive hype.
In all you do …be sure to guard your heart, your mouth and preserve your dignity…Have a great one! I will too….! ENDS
