Volume 50 Issue 7 - July 2012 : Reality Hub

2nd Chance

Author : Otshidile Onkabetse

Reality hub is a new face to Kutlwano, and as the author, I seek to sit down beside you as you read this, to possibly  dine with you or sit with you as you sip on your morning coffee or rock in your office chair. So am I invited? My intention is not to just put a smile on your face or to move you to tears once in a while but to give you a bigger picture of life than what you see at the cinema, or what you, as an individual, experience.

I want to present to you, through words, a deeper experience and knowledge of reality that is beyond yourself. That way, you learn to empathise, sympathise and allow your heart to know, your mind to fathom and your eyes and inner spirit to fully be awakened to the full comprehension and experience of ‘life’ in the hub of reality. You need not travel the world or know a lot of people to achieve this. You just have to listen! It’s as easy as that! A lot of the time we expect second chances to present themselves only in the face of death but what about on a new day or with every beat of your heart? What about after a storm or after you get tired of a certain routine lifestyle? ‘Yesterday’ will always find its way to our ‘today’ and to our ‘tomorrow’ if we allow it. Second chances need to be rid of ‘yesterdays’ baggage.

They offer a clean slate to walk on ‘tomorrow’ as they offer a hope and new beginnings for ‘today’. There will always be another chance to do better or to do right but what happens if it never comes or if it runs out? What if you have made too many mistakes and no one is willing to give you a second chance? I will elaborate. Just keep reading. It is important to look for ‘second chances’ in every moment. Second chances come in different shapes and forms. It could be another exam paper, an act of forgiveness, a wedding ring, a job interview, a heart transplant, a prayer, a new wardrobe, a car, a jail sentence, divorce papers; and many more, I can write a book!

Speaking of books, imagine you were given a book that had all your past failures jotted down, a documentation of all the lies you have told, a list of all the good and bad things you have done, or thought of doing. What if after reading it you realize that there is a need for change and you wish to get a rubber or correction fluid to erase all your shortcomings? Sadly, sometimes damage cannot be reversed. Sometimes too much pain has been harboured, brokenness cannot be mended, walls cannot be built again and the rain just will not stop. Imagine that even with all of that you are given another book titled: ‘second chances’ and in it there are fresh pages and you have a new pen to start all over again. It all begins with your willingness to believe in second chances and to receive it. No one will hand it to you and no one should deny you that. It is up to you to claim it and live it. When you open your eyes wide enough you will begin to see that you are your second chance. … I believe a second chance is a moment in time that we all have to make a U-turn, purely by virtue of being in existence! Often times we do not exercise this great opportunity though we have free will! We choose rather to belly ache and live a life of gloom and guilt and blame our misfortunes on the world and on God instead of taking hold of ‘second chances’. A lot of the time we are rendered unworthy of this beautiful opportunity of ‘second chance’ because the world around us has made it available to certain individuals and withdrawn it from others.

The magnitude of our failures and shortcomings is usually weighed and the result determines the accessibility of a second chance. I believe that our creator has already made it manifest that a second chance is possible at any moment in life but it is only governed by our willingness to receive it. When you decide to take a step to do something ‘differently’, when all you have ever done is to mess up in the same way every time…then it means you are grabbing onto a second chance! You have the power! However,  many ‘second chances’ you have had, you will never run out of them for as long as you live but never think of abusing this privilege because there is a thin line between second chances and your dignity. People often say ‘talk is cheap’, in my context it holds a totally new meaning on the flip side because I feel every word said has more worth than what we give it credit for.

The saying that words can break or make us goes a long way in helping us see the value of words. So I am going to talk until my throat goes dry and when you read I want you to think, because thinking allows you to reflect and gain momentum which gradually helps you become aware of whom you are and see clearly what lies before you. I hope this column can be a place where we each learn to expand our capacity to ‘be’. With that you shall be fully convinced as I am that we should take a hold of our second chances in order to live today, and forget yesterday and hope for a better tomorrow. ENDS
