Set in Germany during the Second World War, Philip Kerr touches on the effects of the war on Germans, Jews and Czechs. He does this through a string of events which lead to several murders investigated by Bernie Gunther. He is a German police detective who was traumatised by torturing innocent Czechs and Jews and so has become suicidal. Because of his character - sturnborn, probing, not very good with taking orders and cynical - he gets chosen to be the one to investigate the murder of one of the German captains. The murder investigation leads to the revelation of some of the things taking place not just in Germany but also the Czech Republic as well as Bohemia.
