Another Year Over: What’ve you got to show?
Author : Otshidile Onkabetse
We`ve all sang our merry Christmas songs, possibly took part in a Jesus-in-a-Manger play (always loved those) and had our barbecues...our beef eating sprees...and maybe gulped down one intoxicating liquid- too many....now all of that is gone...after just a few random heart beats, it`s another year over, a new year has just begun...! 365 days chimed in just a ticking of a clock...
Suddenly we are juxtaposed with our present, future and past... Yesterday is gone.... What have you got to show for it? A pot belly... A new baby? A new hairdo? Boy/girlfriend? a ring on your finger? A scar on your heart? A wrinkled face, a goatee possibly? A well toned torso...or a slightly trim waistline? Or maybe you still the same old same old ‘semang-mang` that everyone has known for the longest time?
A new year brings in ways of starting over....or continuing from where you left off, either way you know there`s a fresh feel about it. Picture an instance of an old garment, torn and tattered as it might be...when you dip it in water and rub a little soap on it and add a dab of fabric softener... leave it to dry and then....voila!! See it`s always been there but once it`s been ironed it seems a whole lot brighter and fresher and there is a newer feel to it when you wear it.
I don`t know what you`ve planned for this year.....but I sure hope you not going to scribble down a few resolutions and expect them to see the light of day on their own! if your planning on doing that please don`t leave that paper to soil on the shelf without attending to it or much less, realising your dreams! Honestly, we need to take advantage of each New Year that comes our way, mind you its more than your dreams and goals, it`s your life, you made it to this day, to this year, not by sheer luck, not by tedious effort, but by Gods Grace.
So if you have set goals for this year and you decide not to make an effort or at least attempt to realise them, then you off to a wrong start...next year might not come your way, I don`t suppose you are fatalistic or anything and carelessly decide to let each passing day dawn on you with no plans of the morrow... I believe in ceasing the moment and maximising the time we have. Set goals, not resolutions, make definite plans and don`t idle aimlessly remember some never got to see the light of day...but you did...don`t live a vain life if you have been doing that, then there needs to be a better plan, come up with a formulae for your life, or a motto to live by!
Don`t let something drastic happen to you or to someone close to you for you to start appreciating the life you have.
You were not purposed to just eat and sleep, if that`s all you`ve been doing...I suggest you critically assess your life...you were purposed to show forth what the creator destined! Don`t let that light within you burn out without having been a lamp to the world around you, be it your family, friends, colleagues.
‘`This little light of mine...I`m gonna let it shine....`` let that be the song you sing every morning. One thing I firmly believe is that God would not have put you on this earth to merely exist....our population is at a whooping 2million now and its growing...refuse to be just a population figure...be an asset to this country.
So again I shall ask it`s another year over......! What have you got to show? I`m sure everything that you have achieved in the past year is worth noting...all your ache vents, financially, physically, spiritually, socially and in every other regard!
Give yourself a pat on the back....if you failed to accomplish others, don`t despair this is a year of new beginnings...your new beginning...Mine and yours...individually and together (whether we know each other or not)
In 2012 I went through my fair share of trials and tribulations....I learned a lot about myself as I took on the journey of self actualisation. It was a bitter sweet experience...one thing I learned, which my Pastor firmly addressed, was the issue of checking if your heart is in the right place. a lot of the time we walk through life and we do things from our mind...and based on how we feel or how we don`t feel...we seldom look at our hearts and do things not only because they are right, but because it comes from the heart.
I challenge you this year to keep your heart in check...refuse to start this year off with baggage in your heart...
Because that where the root of what we do, say and what we are comes from. i challenge you to rid yourself of any bitterness..Anger....jealousy....un-forgiveness....hurt...etc Lurking in your hearts...lay a foundation of love and everything that`s got to do with love in your heart.
Let God heal all your brokenness and loose you of any heaviness that may have found residence in your being, causing you to not live up to the best of your potential. Whatever you do....don`t walk into this year with your PAST in your pocket....step into the FUTURE with the willingness to start on a clean slate.
Remember this life is yours and yours alone to live....only you can be a legend of your time...
And one thing that I want you to know....stop living life as if you are the only one in it....whatever you have been through doesn`t justify a cold heart....and a cold heart got no one anywhere except in utter darkness, selfish living won`t get you any far...and a loving being is all you have to be to realise your full potential. if you have nothing to show for this past year....this new year is your year to shine..!
By the way, if by any chance you see me, please don`t utter the clichéd “compliments of the new season”. Everybody seems to be singing those words everywhere i go... I`m sorry but I prefer ‘happy 2013` or the common “`ngwaga o mosha”” like we say it in our mother tongue! ENDS
