Too busy to care
Author : Otshidile Onkabetse
When was the last time you stopped to greet a stranger, and ask how they are doing? And ask whether everything is going well in their lives? Did you stop to appreciate the service offered by the kombi driver who just drove you to work this morning? Oh how about the grounds man who always smiles at you every morning and tells you how beautiful you look, well you of course give him an uncaring frown and walk away because you deed him a pervert. Did you kiss your partner and tell them you love and appreciate them? Well, I`ve news for you, something I became conscious of even at a personal level. The truth was so daunting, yet I thank God for bringing it up. We are so wrapped up in our own ‘little` world that the bigger world remains so insignificant. The bigger world encompasses real people, who feel…smile…cry... but continue to live for today, hope for tomorrow. So you wonder why you should be mindful of other people`s lives right? …..cause` after all you are too busy to care!
Time ticks so fast, cars have been modeled to move faster than we ever imagined, emails and text messages provide better convenience than letters and telegrams. Talking in person seems a waste of time, Cyberspace provides an array of platforms for social exchange…. making friends has never been so easy! The journey of our lives has never moved at such a fast pace….can we even keep up? Food can be cooked in a few minutes! Not to mention even eaten on the run…..School, work, church, can be attended at the convenience of your own home. I`m ‘for` change, don`t get me wrong….but when change makes us so unaware of the important things around us...Then there`s a problem… (Slow-w-w-w-w down!)
Take a moment to breath and rest in the Lord. Find a moment of serenity amidst the commotions of life, the unending deadlines at work, the telephone that won`t stop ringing, the baby that won`t stop crying, and the loved ones and friends who just won`t stop talking. Take a moment to slow down and let your body take in the beauty of life, the beauty of living, and not only merely existing. Take in the beauty of people...how they speak, and mingle, how they lock lips and procreate. Take in the scenery of Buildings…don`t be too busy to notice even a new hairdo your other half has done, or the effort she makes to dress up and smell good in the morning. Don`t be too busy to care. When was the last time you cooked, cleaned, made an effort in any shape or form? When was the last time you wrote a letter, not a text message, a heartfelt expression of what is on your heart, directed towards your loved ones? Put the technology aside and for a moment care enough to let your heart speak and its contents bleed on paper.
I was passing through town and the shopping complex packed to capacity, I must`ve brushed shoulders with everyone I passed by (Literally), everyone was so busy, shopping for the weekend, I heard loud murmurings from different corners, people on their mobiles, some blasting music in the open space, and groups of people chatting and making noise. The atmosphere was just saturated with noise. Then a distinct sound kept echoing in my head, at least I thought it was an echo, found out that a certain man had been talking and repeating himself to anyone who would care to listen, as he asked for quick change. Like everyone else….who was heading somewhere…thinking about their own cares of the world…..I walked on by!
Moments later, it hit me…I had a note in my bag; I could`ve changed it and gave the man some change. He didn`t ask for the whole world. He didn`t ask for anything that was unattainable. He asked for change. The rest of the world and I….just walked on by…. when he needed change. That`s all he wanted. Spare change! ….but we were too busy to care.
Surely I acknowledge the fact that we can`t feed the whole world, we can`t help every pauper who comes along, but the issue here is not that we didn`t give the man what he asked for, the bigger picture here is that we didn`t care to listen. We were too busy!
Do you ever stop to notice and ‘remember` that the next person too is human, that you are not the only one who has bills to pay, who has a family, who has lost a loved one, who LIVES and breathes and is worthy of time, energy and the goodness that life can bring? I think generally we walk on by, and live this life, and forget that the next person, stranger, friend or foe lives. Our journey through life has been embedded in work, the domestic setup, church, and other commitments seem to consume us. Time has never moved so fast.
Would those guilty of being too busy to care please stand up! (Looks around and remains standing) Yep...That was my guess; no one can actually stand up and say “I`m guilty as charged!”It is not my intention to point out any ones flaws, or make any one feel bad, but it`s just something I noticed about myself and a lot of other people, that almost 100% of our lives are so preoccupied with a lot of things that we forget the seemingly little things which if paid just a little attention to could give you a whole new perspective on life.
Today…I implore you to free your mind of turbulence….care enough to do that for yourself. Indulge yourself; revisit a past time or something, that won`t be consuming. Listen to you inner voice and find out if you are okay! Often times we don`t even ask ourselves “are you okay``…do that…your body will never lie…and if things aren`t okay… PRAY….if they are...GIVE THANKS…and be careful as you tread these busy streets of life. Did I even say hello at the beginning of this article?? My apologies, Oh Hello reader, thank you for caring enough to read this article…..it`s not that I was too busy to care!
