CASPER...Uphondo Lwam'
Author : Lesego Bogatsu
Music is an international language, so let us embrace those that come with multi-lingual songs, for they show skills that are new and fresh.
Casper`s Uphondo Lwam`, which means Lenaka la pitso in Setswana or Kgotla meeting-serenader, is one such offering.
It is a six tracked mbaxanga debut album.
Only the naïve will think that singing in Zulu when you are a Motswana is a big flop, but it is actually an excellent thing to do by an artist as this opens world-wide avenues for him. So all you anti-linguists out there should wise-up and have no fear to learn and speak other languages.
It is alright to domesticate a language to suite or rather express one`s thoughts, feelings and what-so-ever. Uphondo Lwam`, Ngiyamaz ubaba, Ngqunqulu, Sthandwa, Phez Kwelitshe and Dzakayenda are the titles of the poetic songs in this offering.
Songs of different genres, languages from cultures all over the universe have been hits to foreign music lovers, Batswana not excluded, for example; Los Del Rio`s Macarena, Crash Test Dummies` folk rock song - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm.
When featured by Erick Sermon in the song React, Redman even says… “ Whatever she said I`m that ” in response to what the lady singing the chorus says in Portorican language.
And recently the Piano Boys turned Paradise into Peponi and Cold Play song still sounds as great as when sung in English.
This shows that in music, any melody, beat or words can move you. Well done to Casper – The Golden Voice, ten over ten.
