DJ Goueveia...Making a fresh start
Author : Baleseng Batlotleng
In his Facebook profile, he describes himself as a radio presenter, music producer, club DJ, entrepreneur, poet, actor (theatre practitioner and TV acting), computer systems analyst and electrical engineer!.....this might sound pompous for a 28-year old young man but if you get a chance to sit and know him better, you might just change your mind.
Gouveiya Mutasa, better known by his trademark DJ Gouveia of Tino Mudana fame, had to trade his computer and electrical engineering certificates for headphones and turntables. Today he is one of the most sought after mix masters who can well be credited for locally infused house music. Along with his RB2 on-air midnight programme, “The 180 Experience”, Gouveia is also a reputable club DJ who has shared the booth with the industry`s who-is-who.
Apart from the music scene, Dj Gouveia is a renowned actor/theatre practitioner, poet, script writer and dancer. He has performed at the Arts Link Festival in Namibia, SADC Arts Festival in Mozambique, Sebikwa players in South Africa, Market Theatre (Johannesburg), the popular Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, UCT (Capetown), Arts Cape (Cape Town). This year Mutasa dropped a single that has now become a national anthem for night crawlers and a household hit in local radio stations.
Kutlwano`s Baleseng Batlotleng caught up with the dreadlocked and outspoken DJ about his recent verge into fame.
Baleseng: Heita DJ Gouveia, can you tell me one thing people don`t know about you?
DJ Gouveia: Hello my brother. Hei banna! one thing people don`t know about me?.....well one thing people don`t know about me is that they don`t know anything about me.
Baleseng: Tino Mudana, what a song and where did the concept come from?
DJ Gouveia: yaah ne…Tino Mudana which has now been coined to Chino Mudana is Shona for “We are calling Him” (Our God). Modimo wa rona Bantsho, Makgoa le Mazezuru. Growing up from a musical and spiritually inspired background it came out as no surprise when the effort became an instant hit. In short God works in mysterious ways. I worked with a certain gentleman called Dubblin, a Motswana talented young man on the vocals with a Shona background.
Baleseng: Ok but what set you off on this career path?
DJ Gouveia: The journey started off in 2001 under the mentorship of renowned spin doctor, DJ Bunz, in Francistown. Two years down the line I became runner up in Ghetto`s Finest DJ Competition. In 2004 I beat 29 DJs from the north to scoop the Sprite DJ Competition. In 2005 I relocated to South Africa (Capetown) where I started music production. I played in Cape Town`s hottest clubs alongside internationally renowned djs and artistes such as Lebo Mathosa, freshly grounds, Dj T-Bose, Ready-D, Skwatta camp, Brown Dash, Glen lewis, Durban`s finest, Cleo, Tuks, HHP, Malaika, TK, Mandoza, KB, Kalawa Jazme crew just to mention a few and most of the time as a curtain raiser for these big acts. The Big break came in 2011 when I started mixing in DJ Sly`s afternoon drive time show and finally cut a single in 2013 - Tino Mudana.
Baleseng: who is your inspiration?
DJ Gouveia: I grew up with this passion and I listened to the likes of DJ Sly and Otis Fraser on Radio. I would say the art of turntables I learnt a great deal from Otis.
Baleseng: Your family, anyone into music?
DJ Gouveia: Because of her religious background, my mother is an ardent songwriter. I actually took a leaf from her as far as composition is concerned.
Baleseng: What`s the best thing that ever happened to you?
DJ Gouveia: It could be that I`m living my dream. I have grown up hoping to become an entertainer and making a living out of it. I am also trying to build my community. My past has not been merry and I attend talkshows to inspire Banana (YOUTH) not to fall into the trap. My past is embarrassing to say the least and I use myself as a living example.
Baleseng: Any last words?
DJ Gouveia: Keep watching your television screens……..shapo nkgonne!!
