SECHELE 1 – a historical play

Author : Lesego Bogatsu

This is an entertaining, inspirational playful-read for all, especially those who love historical issues. It is about the transition of Sechele 1, his success story of uniting different Tswana groups as well as about his struggle to become a true Christian. What might have transpired during the transition – rejection of his culture and tradition - love affairs that prevailed.
The stage is set austerely, with but about 13 actors in the roles of Sechele 1 and his four wives, David Livingstone and his wife Mary, and may other actors including a poet. The play ponders the possible reasons for Sechele`s drastic switch to Christianity, linking them to lack of or failure of strong Tswana morals.
Author Barolong Seboni`s book, Sechele 1: a historical play, is incredibly laughable and educational.
The action of the play encompasses unity, tradition versus new cultures, the coming of Christianity to Botswana, leadership, the individual and his community.
