Sleeping mortal

Author : Otshidile Onkabetse

Seasons change, babies are born, and people get married…All these and more mark important milestones in any life of an individual. We go to sleep and wake up the next day with bruised, hateful or grateful hearts and we live each day. Nothing can truly ever prepare us for the reality that one day we will be no more. We make plans to live for another day, another year and so forth. We put off some things to a certain time in the future and live according to a prescribed notion of how a good life should be like, trying to make each day count that our joy may be full. And then one day we hear the words: ‘ashes to ashes, dust to dust`` as we once again bid farewell to one who once spoke like us, laughed with us, shared in a moment with us and breathed and had life like we do. One who once walked the earth, but in just one breath, the very life we cherished ebbed away to a world beyond this one. We are mortals; that we all know too well, but nothing can ever truly prepare us, for the reality that death brings.  We are here today gone tomorrow, that is what we are, vapor in the wind….. And the realization of our own mortality seems to dawn on us when someone dies. We are but walking mortals. And one day, like them we will be sleeping mortals. But ask yourself this question: ‘while you still walk this earth,is your walk purposeful or merely a vain life?

I dont mean to sound fatalistic, but we are mortals. Our existence is temporal yet we dont truly understand the magnitude of that. We have but one life to live, either purposeful or in vain. If tomorrow never comes and you only had today, would it make you appreciate others lives and yours more differently? and would you begin to live and not merely exist? would you seek to derive a purpose beyond what is temporal or that which passes away. Would you take time to care or to value the things which you would have otherwise disregarded? Would you take time to seek the face of The One who created you? that in life you may have abundance, and in death you may have life? think about all this.

I felt compelled to touch on such an issue, which i know may evoke discomfort in some...lick painfully healing wounds or leave the mind with unanswered questions. Bear with me a little, and excuse my bluntness, although I`ll try to be sensitive. There is nothing as numbing as looking at a sleeping mortal and wondering where their final resting place is. So I implore you to keep your life in check. A lot of people are uncertain about life after death, yet they do nothing. All hope to go through the pearly gates, but only those who prepared a home for the Saviour while they lived, will find a home prepared for them when they die.

Now concerning those who mourn...Many have lost loved ones, and though the tears may never dry, there is a hope in the promise He gave us. God knows and understands our deepest pains. Beyond the numbness and pain we may feel, is a perfect peace, love and joy He seeks to restore within us, if we allow Him. There is no wound too old, too fresh, too foul, or too deep which He cannot heal. Every pain and anger that you may feel at the loss of a loved one is something toxic which can only be healed by The Father. He created us, surely He knows us best. We may never understand why that mortal had to sleep so soon. The reality may still be a painful memory. Take heart, hold on to The One who has all understanding... find comfort in His Word:

1Thessalonians:4:13-14: ....But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope… For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

This year we have seen many heros in their own right leave this world. Time may limit me, if i tried to name names. If I may for a moment though, remember a man who in our brief encounter selflessly spoke into my life: purpose,  Wisdom and truth- Brooks Monnaanoka. I still cant believe He is gone to be with the Lord, but in that I find comfort. He was my boss and friend. I remember he gave me a call at the beginning of the year just to check on me and in his final words he told me that this was my year to shine. Words cannot to describe the role he played in my personal development. I thank God for the life of this sleeping mortal, whose life was well lived. Those who knew him now hold onto the memories that bring life even in his death.(a mowa wa gago o robale ka kagiso)

It`s not everyday that when someone sleeps their purpose will continue to bear fruit in the lives of those who remain. If you leave only an inheritance of material things then oh human, you did not live, but merely settled for the vanity of effortless existence. A true inheritance is one left in the hearts of others who then feel inspired to walk in the path which you tread. As we live we need to write a good story of our lives. We need to strive to be heros and heroines in our own right. Striving to be everything that God called us to be and that we ask in a simple prayer. Don`t be shy, take a moment to ask God to help you be all that He has called you to be, nothing less. Concerning us who live, may He teach us to number our days, that we may apply [our] hearts unto wisdom. ENDS
