Launch of the new vision
Author : Idah Basimane
Botswana celebrated its golden jubilee on September, 30th this year. It was at the celebrations where Vision 2036 was launched marking the end of Vision 2016.
The purpose of the Vision 2036 as captured in Vision 2036 document is “to achieve prosperity for all”.
The vision is divided into four pillars: Sustainable Economic Development, Human and Social Development, Sustainable Environment and Governance, Peace and Security.
With the Sustainable Economic Development Pillar, Botswana aims to “ be a high-income country with an export-led economy underpinned by diversified, inclusive and sustainable growth driven by high levels of productivity”.
The first pillar also states that Botswana`s economy will be efficient, vibrant, innovative and knowledge based with access to a skilled and international completive work force, leading –edge technology and infrastructure.
The second pillar, Human and Social Development wants Botswana to be a moral, tolerant and inclusive society that provides opportunities for all. “Batswana will be morally upright and tolerant of one another, irrespective of gender, age, location, religion or creed, ethnic origin, sex, disability, language or political opinion”
The third pillar: Sustainable Environment envisages that by 2036 sustainable and optimal use of natural resource will have transformed our economy and uplifted our people`s livelihoods.
By implementing the fourth pillar: Governance, Peace and Security, the vision envisages Botswana will be a land of peace, freedom and progressive governance.
To achieve the vision, the booklet states “we all have an important role to play. Collective ownership and strong leadership from the top levels of governance are key for bringing about the results that we all aspire to. The State President will provide the leadership and champion the delivery of the Vision”.
Effective mechanisms will be put in place to drive, coordinate and monitor implementation across a wide range of stakeholders.
