Fare thee well Zachs

Zachs Gareitse Sethaiso, a distinguished photojournalist and a revered figure in Botswana’s media landscape, passed away on December 9, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and artistry that will be remembered for generations.
Born on March 1, 1956, in Otse, Mr Sethaiso completed his Cambridge Certificate at Swaneng Hill School around 1975.
His passion for the arts led him to pursue further studies abroad, earning a Photography for Education Training Diploma in the UK during 1982-83. Mr Sethaiso continued to hone his skills with an Audio Visual Training Certificate (AVVID) in South Africa in 1986, followed by a Vocational and Advanced Training Photography and Audio Visual Training High National Diploma in Germany in the same year. He later achieved a BA Degree in Fine Photography and Visual Communications in the UK from 1994 to 1999.
Mr Sethaiso launched his career in 1976 as a photojournalist with the Department of Information and Broadcasting, where he passionately dedicated his skills to capturing the essence of history through the lens until his retirement in 2008. Spanning nearly four decades, his illustrious career established him as a cornerstone of Botswana’s media and photography community. One of his first assignments involved documenting the Bontleng area in Gaborone in 1976.
A message of condolences from President Advocate Duma Boko says throughout his career, Mr Sethaiso played a vital role in documenting the nation’s significant events and milestones, serving under four consecutive Presidents of Botswana: Sir Seretse Khama, Sir Ketumile Masire, Dr Festus Mogae, and Lt Gen Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama. He travelled extensively, both within Botswana and internationally, capturing the essence of state affairs and historical moments, with many of his photographs appearing in both local and international media. President Boko said his work has become an integral part of the national archive, reflecting the political and social transformations of Botswana over the decades.
President Boko said the profound impact he made on his peers and his community will never be forgotten.
Beyond his remarkable professional accomplishments, President said Zachs was a gifted mentor, nurturing and guiding many celebrated photographers in Botswana. He dedicated himself to passing on his knowledge to the next generation of image-makers, ensuring that his influence would endure in the industry.
“As we honour his memory, we express our gratitude for the time spent with him and the indelible mark he left on Botswana’s photographic landscape,” he said
His sister Spana Motsisi said Zeke as he was fondly called loved finer things in life. “He was a gentleman who dressed well at all times,” she said.
Motsisi told mourners that his brother had not been well for sometime , but stated that they were hoping that he will heal.
Mr Sethaiso is remembered not only for his professional contributions but also as a loving husband to his wife and best friend, Ms Matutusa Sethaiso. He is survived by his mother, siblings, and children.
