Bakers Affair: A hub for baking creativity

Author : Idah Basimane

Known for its engaging atmosphere, the Bakers Affair Association serves as a vibrant platform that combines culinary exhibitions, competitions, and networking opportunities with renowned bakers and industry experts. With a mission to inspire and connect the baking community, the association celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, and the evolving trends in the baking world.

Bakers Affair envisions seeing the baking industry grow in leaps and bounds to reach untold angles of success. The association is currently supporting a Statutory Instrument issued by the government in 2020, which bans the importation of bread and similar products to bolster the local baking industry.

In addition to advocating for local bakers, the association facilitates community growth by bringing together industry professionals and baking enthusiasts. As a premier gathering for professional pastry chefs, home bakers, confectionery lovers, aspiring bakers, and the general public, Bakers Affair proudly hosts more than 20 enthusiastic participants who set up stalls at its annual event.

One of the key objectives of Bakers Affair is to create a platform where bakers of all levels can share knowledge, foster connections, and uplift each other’s culinary passions. Dr Goitseone Lenyatso, founder of Len Bakeries, shared that the organisation has yielded positive results since its inception in 2022.

Among its many activities, the annual event stands out as a celebration of the artistry, science, and innovation within the baking world. This vibrant gathering creates a dynamic space for learning, networking, experience sharing, and indulgence.

At the Annual Exhibitor Market, a curated selection of baking suppliers and brands showcases the latest tools, ingredients, and technology in the baking field. Attendees had the opportunity to discover new products, sample ingredients, and purchase items that elevate their baking skills.

“The annual event is also an opportunity for bakers to meet, connect, share insights, and collaborate,” Dr Lenyatso noted. Culinary students participate in the event to deepen their baking knowledge, gain valuable insights into the industry, and connect with others who share their passion.

Dr Lenyatso emphasized that this interactive experience empowers individuals, financiers, and even government departments, including parents who want to get involved in the sector.

Gaolaolwe Mbulawa, an attendee and owner of Lame Laaka Yummies Corner based in Palapye, testified that the association has significantly boosted her business. “Now, people are buying from me, and I would gladly recommend that every determined baker join Bakers Affair,” she stated.

Mbulawa also expressed a desire for the government to provide financial support to bakers in Botswana, enabling them to enhance their skills for the betterment of the industry.
