From CHESS BOARD to RACE TRACK

Author : LLucretia Chima

Following his explosive 2nd African Youth Games performance, Karabo Sibanda has become an instant hero. The form four student from Good Hope Senior Secondary School who turns 16 next month shares with Kutlwano his ambitions and prospects for the future.

What is your biggest achievement so far? Winning the 2nd African Youth Games 400m title is such an honour especially after I traded the chess board for the race track and mind you, I was one of the best chess players. So, how I started on the track to where I am today is testimony that I made a wise move, something that most people were not comfortable with.

What inspired you to make that move?

My mother. She used to be an athlete but unfortunately sport was not taken seriously as compared to our times. She is a fan of Justin Gatlin and we once made a bat that Usain Bolt was going to outrun her favourite and I won. Her interest inspired me to join the athletics team and since then I never stopped running.

Do you have any embarrassing moment(s)?

I will never forget the 2013 national competitions, in which I finished in position four. I started throwing up at the finishing line and all eyes were on me. Another person`s vomit is never a good sight (Laughing hysterically).

What sets you apart from other athletes? Nothing really, except that I apply my coach`s instructions. When on the track I know the responsibility lies with me to raise my country`s flag high and make my own name. Athletics is a key to my destiny.

Were someone to replace you as an athlete, who could it be and why?

It will be my younger brother, Sikhanyiso. We share similar interests. He is my training partner and believes in me. I will not hesitate to hand him my spikes because I know he has what it takes, he will never disappoint.

What is the most important thing to you besides sport? My family… I come from a humble family but that has not discouraged them from supporting me. My parents survive through piece jobs but will never allow me to miss any race. They support me with everything and that alone and my desire is to return the favour in future. I want to see them live a desirable life in future.

What is your ultimate career goal? Initially my ideal career was engineering but now it has changed. I want to be a professional athlete such as my role model, Bolt. But having qualifications will be an added advantage for me.

Role model? Internationally - Michael Jones & locally - Isaac Makwala.
