As Botswana is about to go for the general elections, I think it would be appropriate for me to talk about authority since many of us think elections give people authority. The question is do they? First  of all before examining this power, let us define authority. What comes to your mind when this word is pronounced? Nna ke gopola bogosi! Matona, Tautona. These are the people I think have authority over me. Sorry I forgot my boss. Wena? Contrary to our thinking I don`t think Authority is having power or control over others. Authority is not something you automatically receive with a title (Boss, CEO, President, Chairman, etc). Personal authority is inherent within every human being, whether that person is considered the one “in charge” or following orders. 

One way or the other, I get your argument but that does not seem to make sense, one would say. 

With that comment in mind let me add salt to injury by saying Authority is also inherent within every living thing created on earth. It is natural. It does not have to be invented. 

It cannot be given to someone - only released and developed.

What then is AUTHORITY? Is it that thing that gives a thing or a person ability to fulfill his/her/its authority in the area, or the domain of his, her, its gifting?  Let`s take a seed for example. It may look small but it has a powerful authority. If you put it in the right soil it will geminate and come out in a different form. 

It is the authority that is built in it that makes it to bear fruit and produce according to its own kind.  What I Mokanoki is trying to say here is that you have a personal authority that enables you to fulfill your purpose on earth. Take Amantle Montsho for example, if you ask her to play football, do you think she will do well as she does in a race?

That is what I`m trying to say. Amantle does not have authority in football. It is very important for you to understand what authority is. Understanding here means knowledge and comprehension of the original purpose and intent of a thing.  Because understanding of the principle of which authority was designed to function will always assist us not to abuse our authority. For us to posses understanding of authority, we must know its original intent. Firstly, what was in the mind of its creator, secondly, how did the maker of the authority intend it to function. 

It is so important that we should understand where our authority lies; nothing is truly yours until you understand it. If we understand where we have been authorised to faction we will always be able to overcome all our problems. 

No matter how much you sit and listen, if you are without understanding, it is still not yours. You can never truly own or posses authority if you don`t understand. 

Let us take this one step further. If you don`t understand yourself, you have not yet possessed yourself. 

My plan in this issue of Kutlwano is that we will learn the purpose, principles and functions that we were born with. 

The concept of personal authority is referred to in various ways in the Scriptures, with some variations in terms, depending on the translation: “call” or “calling,” “will of God,” “appointed,” “ordained,” “gift,” “work,” “ability,” “assigned task”. These words reveal aspects of the meaning of personal authority.  

For example, Jesus told a parable about a man who entrusted his money to his servants while he went away on a trip.  

“To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability” (Matthew 25:15). 

The word “ability” in this verse means “miraculous power” of “force”.  This word implies that each servant had certain inherent capabilities to make something of the money entrusted to him, and that with those capabilities came a responsibility to exercise them.  You, too, have capabilities and are entrusted with a personal authority to carry them out on behalf of your Creator.
