Author : Faith Mothelesi and Wendy Sentoba
Born to shine, Peggy Grynberg started embracing the stage as a model at a very tender age. The 20-year-old continues to glow. She speaks to Faith Mothelesi and Wendy Setonba about her journey to becoming the next Tyra Banks and her hope to touch more hearts and make a difference in her own country.
Q. Who is Peggy Grynberg? In a nut shell tell us who are you.
A. Peggy Grynberg is a 20-year-old university student who is currently majoring in Bachelor of Arts doing Criminal Justice. Maun is my home town, hahahaha... and basically I am a free spirited, open minded, very kind, welcoming and hehehe... a sweet person when you get to know me better.
Q. Even without knowing who Peggy is, you seem like a much focused individual, you represented us well abroad in New York, tell us how your modelling career started and when?
A. Well, I started modelling at the age of 13. I was influenced by my mother after I was stopped by a lady at Game City who was interested in me and wanted me to try out modelling. At first I was very skeptical because I did not know what modelling was. Since my mother wanted me to try it out, I went to her modelling school that is when I started my training, learning how to walk and how to pose, and everything models needed to know, that is basically it.
Q. Let`s talk about Peggy on stage, how do you manage to be that excellent on stage, and showing the no fear element. What`s your secret? Do you camp or it`s because of your early training at the age of 13?
A. I think no one can overcome fear. Even celebrities and stars, right now also become scared and nervous before they go on stage. So basically coming from the long years of training and doing what I had been doing for a long time it made me feel more comfortable and because I`m sure and I know what I`m doing, before I get on stage yes I do get a bit of nerves here but that is actually what gives me the drive to do more. It boosts and gives me energy to perform.
Q. Word has it that you have a modelling agency. What inspired you to start your own agency? Tell us more about it.
A. It`s actually a modelling school which I started three years ago. Initially, I started after I came back from New York the first time because I had a lot of girls emailing me wanting to know what it took to be a model and how I can assists them. That is what drove me to set up my own modelling school. I had to pause because of my education but since I am now in university and more stable, I decided to start it again. Ever since I was crowned second princes of Miss Botswana, more girls came forward seeking help, I opened it up again this year.
Q. There are more girls out there in rural areas who want to follow in your footsteps. How are you going to help them reach their goals?
A. For now, since I`m based in Gaborone and I have a lot of things I`m doing at the moment. It was my main focus to do it in Gaborone. However, during the past Christmas holidays, I passed by Maun since it`s my home village. I had a workshop with aspiring models on the steps one needs to come to the level which are required of a model.
Q. After all that you have said, who is your inspiration?
A. Okay! Growing up, my inspiration was Tyra banks hahahhahaha... I know it sounds cliché. Well, growing up, I used to watch her show. Looking at her life, she was bullied at a younger age for being tall and skinny. I related much to her because our story is so similar more especially at primary school. She inspired me because she became better than what people expected her to be, and she completely proved them wrong that no matter how you look like, you can become whatever you want to be in life.
Q. Well said Peggy! There is always speculations surrounding models that they don`t eat, how true is it looking at how slim you appear?
A. Well, that is entirely not correct because I personally do not have a particular diet. I eat just about anything and luckily I have a fast metabolism. So all this speculations are a myth. Models do eat more because their work is straining, they need energy to perform well on stage. So yea!
Q. Where do you see yourself in future, like in five years, what are your goals?
A. I do have goals. I want to see myself somewhere. Since I am doing Criminal Justice I want to become a judge or a prosecutor and from there I will be having a well built modelling school as a part time to train Batswana models to grow the industry.
