Agony + Flies = MISA Awards

Ask former Kutlwano sub editor and now Kweneng Bureau Chief, Rebaone Tswiio, whose story, When flies take over, earned him a Print Journalist of the Year award. The story told of how distressing it was to be a Gamodubu resident and having to deal with a swarm of flies from a nearby landfill.

The journalist he is, even when he goes through some kind of agony, to him, it is not just about the feeling but the story behind that is worth sharing with other people.

Thus, the agony of going through power cuts that plagued the country recently had to be told and the way Tswiio told it, through a piece,  The agony of power cuts, earned him yet another award - Best Feature Writer of the Year.

Winning these two prestigious awards, Ribs or MoRebazo as affectionately called by his colleagues, automatically qualified him for the Overall Journalist of the Year award at the 2013 Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Awards.

This is what he had to say about the awards: “The awards are humbling in that independent judges acknowledge your work, and therefore winning encourages you to do more.”

He says being a journalist of the year was just a tag, which he thinks translated into the best learner. “Since I did not study journalism at school, so yah I came, I learnt and learning conquered,” he enthuses.

Tswiio says upcoming journalists should always aspire to satisfy their readers with fair and balanced stories and that ethics should never be compromised for a scoop.

The awards were not Tswiio`s first as he scooped the Investigative Reporter of the Year and Journalist of the Year awards in 2011.

Tswiio graduated from University of Botswana (UB) with Bachelor`s Degree in Humanities back in 2003 and joined BOPA the following year. He also had a short stint as sub editor for Kutlwano before he was transfered to head the Kweneng Bureau. ENDS
