The rougher the start, the better the end

Yes! Gaborone has certainly lived up to its billing after  successfully hosting the 2nd African Youth Games. Consequently, Botswana`s ability to pull off such an impressive continental event has got the world talking.

Forget about the negative media reports doubting the local organising committee`s ability to host an event of such magnitude, Botswana has done it. Controversy or no controversy, the countless brave men and women ensured disappointment found no room to jeopardize Botswana`s chances of being hailed for a job well done. They dreamt and they delivered on their dream. What more except to salute them!

Kutlwano relives some of the moments of Gaborone 2014. It was a mixed bag of drama, surprises and disappointment but in the end a sense of pride prevailed.

The games` opening ceremony attested to the adage that any road that starts smoothly leads nowhere while the rougher the start, the better the end. Regardless of the hullabaloo, Batswana thronged the National Stadium to be a part of this memorable event, the first of its kind on their soil.

Young and old, all came from different corners of the country. Initially, one would have been discouraged from going into the stadium due to poor organisation at the entrance. Anxious spectators became livid waiting longer outside while stands stood yawning. Security personnel seemed unprepared to handle such a huge crowd and that almost resulted in a stampede.

The crowd forced its way in. It was not a good sight as children and some adults were not spared in the fracas. Tickets became useless. “The Police are to blame for this mess, why should they close the gates when the stands are empty?” remarked one spectator after a taxing entry. Despite the false start, the atmosphere on the stands was unwinding, people creating waves and singing. A sight to marvel.

It brought back memories of yesteryear independence celebrations whereby people would fill the stadium to full capacity. Helicopters flying the games flags also propelled the ecstatic crowd. It was a sight to behold.

The spirit of patriotism was evident given the songs about the country. The blue, black and white flags, clothes and accessories such as stickers, earrings and wigs added to the colourful event.

Entertainment acts wowed the already eager crowd, making a lasting impression on Batswana and visitors alike. Maxy, Vee and Team Distant sealed the night`s mood.

Many a spectator left the opening ceremony with high expectations about the days ahead.

The games held at different venues enjoyed reasonable turnouts. The huge support boosted Team Botswana`s morale in the race for medals. ENDS
