BECHUANALAND Capital`s Water and Electricity Unit, which came into existence on March 1 is now operating as an independent undertaking. The intention is to form a statutory authority. But in the meantime this utility undertaking is under the general management of the Engineer-in-charge, Mr. F. J. Halligey, who reports to the Ministry of Works and Communications.

The Unit is responsible for the operation of the power Station, Purification Works and elevated reservoir. It is also responsible for the supply of electricity and water, the reading of meters, the issue and collection of accounts and the general operational control of the undertaking.

Road Work Starts

Work has started on the clearing and levelling of several roads in Gaberones, in preparation for paving and tarring. The estimated time for the completion of the current road programme in and around Gaberones has been given as 12 months.

A Ministry of Works official has said that within two months “we will be seeing some sections of the roads in Gaberones tar-macadamed”.

The work is being carried out by two contracting companies. One company, Peter Sladden, Ltd, of Salisbury, working on the International Development Association programme, is engaged on a section of several miles of the Lobatsi-Francistown road, where it runs through Gaberones.

CONTRACTORS

This firm is also working on the main Zeerust road between Gaberones and the Republic Border Gate. Additional connecting trunk roads within the Gaberones Township are included in the same contract.

The other contracting firm, Asphalt and General Contractors, of Johannesburg, will tarr the roads in the new Township and the existing Gaberones village. The paving and landscaping of the shopping Mall is also an important part of the work of this contractor.

The “Bechuanaland Daily News” states that the whole process of clearing, carrying out the earthworks (which includes levelling), is likely to take about nine months.

Fibre-cutting at Tsanakona

A fibre-cutting and preparing company, is now operating at Tsanakona, nine miles from Maun, along the main motor road to Sehitwa. The company has started carting their cut of fibrous materials from Tsanakona to Maun once or twice weekly.

The fibrous vegetation is cut and prepared into numerous rolls, which are loaded into motor transport at Maun and taken to Francistown. There, the material is used for making sacks. ENDS
